Strategies for Using Software to Strengthen Qualitative Data Analysis (H8)

Abstract

This hands-on, interactive session will provide an introduction to qualitative data analysis software as a tool to support rigorous qualitative analysis in evaluation. Prior to the session, participants will be provided with access to NVivo, a qualitative data analysis software tool. Working with sample data provided, participants will create a project, practice coding, and explore query tools to facilitate qualitative and mixed methods analysis.

While activities will focus most intensively on working with text documents as data, we will also explore the capabilities for working with open-ended and fixed response survey data, demographics, social media content, audio, video and images.

Ample opportunity will be provided for questions and discussion regarding participants’ planned or existing projects. Please note that while this session will be conducted with NVivo, the concepts and strategies discussed will be relevant to most qualitative data analysis software tools.

Note: Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop, and download and install the NVivo software tool prior to the session. A 30-day trial license is available at no cost at www.qsrinternational.com/products_free-trial-software.aspx.
